Weekend Getaway

Enjoy a quiet weekend in Hampshire County, the gateway to the Potomac Highlands: a naturally gorgeous area enveloped by mountains, rivers and springs. Experience the roots of American history at museums, cemeteries, trains and along marked trails.

DAY ONE:

Take yourself home down country roads for a stay at Capon Springs & Farms, a 19th century all-inclusive resort getaway, where you are taken care of by generations of the same family and local community of co-workers. Feast on all you can eat made-from-scratch meals with farm raised eggs, pork and beef. Get a true vacation where you can completely relax and not have to worry about anything. Drink, soak and swim in the healing Capon Springs water as it flows through the entire resort, including their award-winning swimming pool and spa.

DAY TWO:

From the resort, take a 30 minute scenic drive along the Cacapon River to Capon Bridge to enjoy the new award winning agricultural tourism spots Farmer’s Daughter and The River House. Arrange a docent-led tour of the Nature Conservancy’s Ice Mountain Preserve, where you can hike among rare arctic plants and/or take a moderate climb up to a scenic overlook. Take another 30-minute country road drive to the county seat, the city of Romney. Locally-owned and operated, get a good night’s rest at either the South Branch Inn or the Koolwink Motel and enjoy great meals at the Main Street Grill.

DAY THREE:

Enjoy downtown Romney with a self-guided historical walking and shopping tour, including a visit to the newly opened Hampshire County CoOp & Heritage Market Place. Then a five-minute drive to board the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad for a beautiful train ride along the South Branch of the Potomac River to see bald eagles.
